The last of the top ten is Spotify (48%), which saw an increase in penetration from 35% in 2017 to close to 50%. It is followed by Facebook Messenger (70%), Google Maps (70%) and Twitter (63%). Instagram, in sixth place, climbed four positions between 20, with an increase in penetration from 49% to 75%. The other two apps in the top five are Gmail (86%) and WhatsApp (85%), with the latter consolidating its position as the chat or messaging platform most widely used in Chile. YouTube (90%) takes third place, demonstrating the importance of video which, according to Movistar, accounts for over 60% of all mobile traffic. In second place, Google, which comes pre-installed on Android devices, is on 93% of phones. This implies that 94% of Movistar’s mobile customers have downloaded this app, have it installed in their phones and have used it. At the head of the ranking, Facebook, with a 94% real penetration rate, is the platform most used from mobile phones, both in its app and web dimensions. Out of the 30 most popular apps listed in the report, 30% are social and messaging platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter. According to SUBTEL, this positions the company as having the largest share of mobile data traffic in the country. The report considers the traffic of all Movistar’s mobile customers (more than 9 million) in the second half of 2018. Movistar indicated that the results of the report are based on “real penetration” or, in other words, considering how many users have the apps installed and how many times they are used on their devices.
