The Storyplace isn’t empty either, it’s full of various bits of craft, in particular play-doh. My Storyspace is a simple place, maybe a little smaller than your average lounge room (remember just because an idea is big doesn’t mean it’s great – you need technique, patience, and precision to truly turn a great idea into a great story). Now I’m really going to indulge my imagination here, but I think it works. Like any other monkey, this one likes to grab things and then throw them about willy nilly. There is no other half sitting over my shoulder and whispering in my ear, no magic faerie sprinkling inspiration dust over my keyboard. That’s not to say there’s no monkey on my back, but it’s a monkey I put there myself and something that I can work with given the time and the willpower. I guess some of us call that a muse, though I personally don’t buy into that. Our imaginations can help form entire novels, only to reveal to us one crucial change right at the very end. While it wasn’t something that I expected to happen, it does feel natural and it’s definitely exciting.īut there’s a catch – isn’t there always?Īs writers, our imagination can be both a blessing and a curse. Will I make it? Who knows? It is now clear that the novel is going to exceed the 100,000 word estimate my deadline was based upon, but a deadline is a deadline, right? One thing that I’ve noticed is happening more and more the closer I draw to the end, is that I’m rehashing the beginning of my book, reworking scenes and characters and even the entire opening. It’s fitting that I write this just thirteen days before the finish line. Like I said, we’re all different, so the only Storyspace I’m truly qualified to talk about is my own. It’s about ideas and the place in our heads where they all come together. We can talk about inspiration and role models and favourite authors until winter finally comes, but that’s not what this post is about. Everyone’s Storyspace is different, because we are all different. Personally, I prefer my own head: far more portable. I’m sure we all have one, whether is real life or somewhere in our heads. Storyspace, it’s a place where we go to think about writing.
